About Sigandoor

Sigandoor

A unique temple of Chowdeshwari Devi reached by a ferry across the backwaters.

Sigandoor is a small village in the Shimoga district, nestled in the backwaters of the Sharavathi river (Linganamakki Dam). The main attraction is the Chowdeshwari Temple. The journey involves a picturesque launch (ferry) ride that carries passengers and vehicles across the water.

History & Significance

History

The Sigandoor Chowdeshwari temple is relatively recent in its popularity but ancient in its roots. The idol was reportedly found by a local named Sheshappa in the dense forest 300 years ago.

History

This region was submerged during the construction of the Linganamakki Dam, isolating Sigandoor. The Goddess is considered very powerful and is famously known as the protector against theft. People who have lost valuables or face property disputes come here to pray. Devotees perform a "Board Keeping" ritual where they place a mud board with the issue written on it, believing the Goddess will solve it.

The annual fair in January (Makara Sankranti) attracts lakhs of devotees.
