About Malpe Beach
A pristine port town known for its golden sands and St. Mary’s Island.
Malpe is a major natural port and fishing harbor in Karnataka, located just 6 km from Udupi. It is known for its endless stretch of golden sand, palm trees, and the clear blue sky. It is the first beach in India to have 24/7 WiFi and is immensely popular for water sports and the nearby St. Mary's Island.
History & Significance
Malpe has been an ancient trading center for centuries, dealing with the Arabs and later the Portuguese. It lies at the mouth of the Udyavara River.
The most significant historical and geological feature nearby is St. Mary's Island. Vasco da Gama is said to have landed here in 1498 on his voyage to Kerala and named it "El Padron de Santa Maria". The island is famous for its distinctive hexagonal basaltic rock formations, which are millions of years old—a geological monument similar to the Giant's Causeway in Ireland.
The beach itself has transformed from a quiet fishing village into a vibrant tourist hub, while still maintaining its cultural roots with the local fishing community which brings in fresh catch every morning.
