About Kodachadri

Kodachadri

The 10th highest peak in Karnataka, home to the Sarvajna Peetha.

Kodachadri is a mountain peak with dense forests in the Western Ghats (Shivamogga District). It is a declared natural heritage site. The name translates to "Jasmine of the Hills". It is not just a trekking spot but a deeply spiritual place connected to Adi Shankaracharya and Goddess Mookambika.

History & Significance

History

Kodachadri is where Adi Shankaracharya performed severe penance. At the peak, there is a small stone structure called the "Sarvajna Peetha" (Seat of Omniscience) where he meditated. It is believed to be the place where the Goddess appeared before him.

History

Halfway up the hill, there is an iron pillar (Trishul) which is considered ancient and rust-proof, similar to the iron pillar of Delhi. There are also ancient caves known as Ganesha Guha where idols are worshipped.

The hill is also the source of the river Souparnika, which flows down to Kollur. The sunset from the peak, with the Arabian Sea visible as a golden strip on the horizon, is a mesmerizing sight.
