About Kapu Beach
A golden beach famous for its century-old lighthouse and large boulders.
Kapu (or Kaup) is a beach village located between Udupi and Mangalore. The beach is predominantly known for its towering lighthouse and the scattered volcanic rocks that give it a dramatic look. It is less crowded than Malpe and offers a more rustic experience.
History & Significance
The Kapu Lighthouse was built in 1901 by the British East India Company to warn sailors about the rocky shores. It stands 27 meters tall on a massive rock foundation. The optics were imported from Chance Brothers, Birmingham.
Historically, Kapu was a Jain center. There are ruins of Jain Basadis lined across the coast, though the beach is the primary attraction today. It was also a strategic point during the time of Tipu Sultan due to its elevation.
