About Jog Falls

The second-highest plunge waterfall in India.

Jog Falls, created by the Sharavathi River falling from a height of 253 meters (830 feet), is one of the most majestic waterfalls in India. Unlike other waterfalls, Jog falls drops directly without streaming over rocks. It is located near Sagara.

History & Significance

The falls are locally known as Gerusoppa Falls. The water splits into four distinct streams, each with a name reflecting its character:

1. **Raja (King)**: Falls with dignity and a serene majesty.

2. **Roarer**: Rushes with a tremendous noise into a basin and joins the Raja.

3. **Rocket**: Shoots downwards in a series of jets.

4. **Rani (Queen)**: Falls in a graceful sheet of foam, mimicking a dancer.

The falls have been a tourist attraction since the British era. The Linganamakki Dam upstream controls the flow, so the falls are most spectacular when the dam gates are open during monsoons.
