About Horanadu
The abode of Annapoorneshwari, the Goddess of Food and Nourishment.
Horanadu is located in the scenic Chikkamagaluru district, surrounded by thick vegetation and coffee estates. The presiding deity is Goddess Annapoorneshwari. The name "Horanadu" is derived from "Hora" (outside) and "Nadu" (country/land), implying a beautiful land outside the plains.
History & Significance
The temple was established by Agastya Maharishi several centuries ago. However, the current structure and the idol were consecrated in 1973. The primary deity, Annapoorneshwari, is made of gold and stands on a peetha.
It is believed that Lord Shiva once had an argument with Parvati, stating that everything in the world (including food) is an illusion (Maya). To prove the importance of food, Parvati disappeared, causing a famine. Shiva realized that food is "Brahma" (supreme truth) and prayed to her. She reappeared as Annapoorneshwari and fed Shiva. Hence, no devotee leaves this temple hungry.
Following this legend, the temple serves free three-course vegetarian meals to all visitors, irrespective of caste or creed, every single day.
